Africa’s wildlife and spectacular landscapes captivated me as a child. The elephants were especially social and endearing. My parents allowed us to keep all sorts of pets. Sara, our serval cat, lived with us for several years. Our friends cared for an orphaned elephant calf and a cheetah cub after their mothers were taken by poachers.
Africa always remains in the back of my thoughts and I have done volunteer work with her wildlife. Her animals remain close to my heart. Frequently they struggle to survive due to poaching and habitat loss.
Writing and nature are my passions. I’ve explored some of the the wildernesses still left on the planet. It gave me a sense of how much we depend on the natural world. Our own outlook improves when we acknowledge this planet is for all beings, not just human beings.
Anyone who cares needs to play a part, not matter how small, before it’s too late and our wildernesses are gone forever. We won’t win if we wait for others to sort out problems. Many ways exist to contribute. I donate to the World Land Trust. Our salvation relies on saving our wildlife. Each drop helps create a tide of change.
